This unfinished self-portrait was found on Bacon's easel in his Reece Mews studio on his death in April 1992. As is typical of Bacon's procedure, the background has yet to be laid in. The head of the central figure is the most highly developed part of the canvas. It is unclear how many figures the artist intended to include in this composition. The circular outline may have been drawn using a dustbin lid, The vertical and horizontal lines framing the composition were probably made with a T-square.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/bacon-floorplan.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Floorplan of Francis Bacon Studio</image:title><image:caption>Floor-plan of Francis Bacon Studio</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/1963-14smaller.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Francis Bacon Studio</image:title><image:caption>Francis Bacon Studio</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/450px-three_studies_for_figures_at_the_base_of_a_crucifixion.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Three_Studies_for_Figures_at_the_Base_of_a_Crucifixion</image:title><image:caption>Francis Bacon; Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, 1944. Meath</image:title><image:caption>[2:28] Two gold torcs, Tara, Co. Meath.
Middle Bronze Age, 1200–1000 bc.
Found at the Rath of the Synods, Tara, Co. Meath, in 1810, these magnificent torcs which, between them, contain over a kilogram of gold, are the finest of their class from Ireland. They are of exceptionally large size and are further elaborated by the addition of extensions to the terminals, a feature which is not recorded elsewhere. Torcs of this type are made from bars of square or rectangular section, the angles of which have been hammered up to produce flanges. The even twisting of such a long bar requires considerable expertise and understanding of the working properties of the metal. W192, W173. D. 43.0 and 37.3 cm; Wt. 852.0 and 385.1 g.

Monaghan.
Early Bronze Age, 2200–2000 bc.
Discovered in the roots of an old tree, this pair of discs is the largest and most sophisticated of the Early Bronze Age discs known from Ireland. A complex arrangement of raised lines, rows of dots and zig-zags has produced a central cross surrounded by concentric patterns similar to other discs but much more elaborate in composition and, technically, far superior. The combination of the techniques of repoussé, punching and polishing, together with the slight doming of the surfaces, highlights and gives a depth and texture to the discs not seen on other pieces. 1872:34, 35. It tells the story of the Three Wise Men being wakened by an angel and pointed in the direction of a star. Gislebertus in a very simple beautiful way shows us the kings asleep together wearing their crowns. One blanket sweeps over the three kings. He shows us the bed at such an angle that we can see all three kings. The angel is gently waking one of the kings by touching his hand and is pointing the way for the kings</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/apostle-at-st-sernins-1090s.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Apostle at St Sernin's 1090's</image:title><image:caption>Apostle at St Sernin's </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/interior-saint-sernin.jpg</image:loc><image:title>interior-saint-sernin</image:title><image:caption>Interior of St Sernin's </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/9355578.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Aerial view of St Sernin's </image:title><image:caption>Aerial view of St Sernin's </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/groin-vault.gif</image:loc><image:title>Groin Vault</image:title><image:caption>Groin Vault</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/barrel-vault.gif</image:loc><image:title>Barrel Vault</image:title><image:caption>Barrel Vault </image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2014-06-21T20:58:14+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>weekly</changefreq><priority>0.6</priority></url><url><loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/gothic/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/groundplan-of-chartres-cathedral1.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Groundplan of Chartres Cathedral</image:title><image:caption>Groundplan of Chartres Cathedral</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/site_0081_0001-594-0-20061213122149.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Chartes Cathedral - West Facade </image:title><image:caption>Chartes Cathedral - West Facade </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/chartres-1.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Chartres</image:title><image:caption>View of Chartres Cathedral</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/milan_cathedral_spires_2_500.jpg</image:loc><image:title>milan_cathedral_spires_2_500</image:title><image:caption>Milan Cathedral</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/rouen-cathedral.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Rouen Cathedral</image:title><image:caption>Rouen Cathedral </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/high-classic-gothic-churches.jpg</image:loc><image:title>High/ Classic Gothic Churches</image:title><image:caption>High/ Classic Gothic Churches</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/early-gothic-churches1.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Early Gothic Churches</image:title><image:caption>Early Gothic Churches</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://arthistoryleavingcert.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/rose-window-notre-dame-paris.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Rose Window ; Notre Dame, Paris</image:title><image:caption>Rose Window; Notre Dame, Paris.
